Since its inception, the Second Chance Program has seen a steady increase in both coverage and success.

The Right to Education law in India guarantees free and compulsory schooling to all children up to Grade 8. However, for a variety of reasons (such as distance, cost, access, socio-economic constraints and cultural barriers) many students drop out of school or discontinue their education. This phenomenon is even more pronounced for girls and young women especially in rural areas.

Pratham's Second Chance Program focuses on providing girls who have had to drop-out of school another chance at education. The program focuses on completion of Grade 10, in the hope that this academic certificate will provide opportunities for educational growth and employability.

Currently, Pratham has Second Chance centres in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Telangana.

From its inception in 2011, over 18,000 (27,000) girls have benefited from Pratham's Second Chance program. The number of students who appeared for the Board examinations until now is 17,134. Overall, the pass percentage of students is 75%.

To continue to expand and to help even more girls who need support, Pratham needs your help!

Pratham's AUS now offers the opportunity for supporters to be a Second Chance Partner and to support the worthy work of the Pratham Education Foundation on an ongoing basis through a monthly contribution. Together, with a contribution each month, we can help young girls struggling to get an education to get a second chance for maximising future opportunities in life.

Pratham AUS has been recognised as a public benevolent institution (PBI) in Australia and endorsed as a deductible gift recipient (DGR). This means your Second Chance Partner donations will be tax deductible to the extent permitted by Australian law!

We offer three levels of contribution for your consideration:

$10 per month - could teach six children to read and write over a year

$30 per month - could support a young woman returning to education for a year

$50 per month - could fund hospitality training for three young women at the Pratham Institute
